ICAST Launches in Arizona

ICAST has partnered with Arizona Public Service (APS) to help them with their low-income weatherization program for multifamily properties across their territory.  ICAST will be working with APS’s current solution providers including Foundation for Senior Living(FSL) to offer its comprehensive one-stop-shop service to affordable housing clients in APS territory.

ICAST Champion: Edwards Mother Earth

Edwards Mother Earth Foundation, a family foundation, has supported ICAST since 2016. Their support has allowed ICAST to explore the limits of net-zero energy design in  affordable multifamily housing, test aggregating solar financing strategies and create digital energy efficiency education materials.  Most recently, Edwards Mother Earth Foundation has funded ICAST to explore methods of monetizing its carbon emission reduction in a manner that could be replicated by other environmental nonprofits.  This fits in with the philanthropic mission of Edwards Mother Earth Foundation, to enhance the sustainable and diverse quality of life by addressing global climate disruption.

Los Angeles Looks to Require Ride Share Companies
to Use Electric Cars.

Los Angeles reportedly wants to require Uber and Lyft to use electric cars. Mayor Garcetti said: “We have the power to regulate car share. We can mandate and are looking closely at mandating that any of those vehicles in the future be electric.” Implementing the EV policy for Uber and Lyft drivers could be tricky as most drivers own their vehicles. Regardless, Mayor Garcetti is seeking any means to use city powers to mitigate climate change. “Local actors, no matter who is in power, are the most critical elements of whether or not we win the fight against climate change. It is local governments and regional governments that regulate or directly control building codes, transportation networks, and electricity generation, which together are 80% of our emissions.”

The Netherlands’ Supreme Court Requires Government to Slash Carbon Emissions

The Supreme Court in The Netherlands has upheld a ruling requiring the government to slash greenhouse gas emissions by at least 25% of 1990 levels by the end of next year. The case was brought six years ago by the Urgenda environment group in a bid to force ministers to go well beyond European Union (EU) targets. In its recent decision, the Supreme Court said it had based its ruling on the UN climate convention and the state's legal obligation to protect the lives and well-being of Dutch citizens. "There is a great deal of consensus in the scientific and international community over the urgent need for a reduction in greenhouse gases," the court said. Urgenda took up the case on behalf of 886 Dutch citizens, arguing that their government had a legal duty to prevent climate change and should seek a bigger reduction. They first won their case in June 2015 but it was challenged by the government all the way to the Supreme Court.
